I Text Banked For Biden and Here's What I Learned

After the election four years ago, I fell into a dark hole along with millions of other people who were suddenly worried about the future of our nation. I feared the rise of white supremacy, the division of groups already on the path of no return, and for the first time in many years I felt unsafe as a woman. It was a new sensation to me, this eerie feeling that everything was about to change … and not for the better.
John Mulaney kind of said something to the effect of, “Remember when Obama was president and we didn’t have to think about the President every day because you knew he was doing his job and everything was fine?” Well, I suddenly longed for those days. Little did I know that for four years I would be forced to think about the man who won nearly every single day, each dumb sentence or catastrophic lie worse than the one before. My stomach hurt, I developed anxiety, and for the first time in my life I considered buying a gun. Seriously. ME. A GUN.
Cut to 2020, the year we have all collectively decided will be known as “the dumpster fire of a year” that has now added Alex Trebek to the list of joys we will never have ever again. When the candidates started winding up early in the year, I had already decided that no matter who won the democratic nomination, I would support them with every fiber of my being. I rooted for Kamala, became obsessed with Mayor Pete, and was reminded of how much I love Joe Biden and his little known buddy, President Obama.
Then Biden won the nom, named Kamala (YES) and it was time to hit the charred, COVID covered ground. A friend introduced me to Sister District, and while we focused on the importance of local elections, I signed up with Victory 2020, as well as the Women’s March, and began text banking. This time I was not going down without a fight.
If you have never text banked (or phone banked) it is important to know that it is one of the most fascinating social experiments I have ever participated in. Some days were hopeful and I learned a ton about friendly Democrats and Republicans all over the US, while other sessions required a thick skin and taught me about life in those little red shapes all over the map.
I began to keep a note of all the interesting, terrible, and vulgar things people would text to me. In the interest of privacy I won’t share names or locations, although I bet you can guess several things about the senders of these texts without much information.
I am not sharing these texts to shame, but to remind people of the importance of what Joe has been saying for the last week. We have to come together, and the division needs to end. Sure, it’s easy for me to say, my guy won…but I would also like to add that much like the last four years, the other dude has done nothing but serve his own interests for the last week. People are dying, businesses are crumbling, families are being torn apart, and people deserve more.
Well, buckle up everyone, I have a feeling it’s going to get better…or it won’t, what the hell do I know? I’m just some opinionated Los Angeles liberal who impulse buys $4 necklaces off Instagram that say “Go Fuck Yourself” in fancy cursive.
FYI - I am intentionally leaving all misspellings in the texts below as an added exercise in grammar. Enjoy!
I would send a text that said something along the lines of “Hi Tom Hardy, this is MK with the Dems and I was wondering if you were registered to vote?” and right out of the gate I would receive these :

Well it doesnt look like you read my text or you would know women issue are not high on my list. Judges suck and they are not gods. Envirment issue are low on my list too. Yes your right, but you stated women issues are they above men issues, you stated envrmnt issue arent those local, you state judges arent those local, many local issue are national issues, urban issues are not suberan issues but laws that are pass dont take that into account. Same with national laws dont just apply to just the problem but effect everyone. Health care law has hurt more then help with the cost going up because the mandates doctor have to follow. Education has fail us when people fall for scammer on envrmnt issue, consitution right, history, gender, sex. But are these local issue only "no". Look how work up the miss inform are with covid19 the govermnt is scaring them but when cooler heads try to rationalise it they are shutdown. P.S. Joe and Kamala I want you to know that I do not agree with any of the horribly offensive things said above, and I do not condone speaking to people this way, however it was enlightening to hear what the other side had to say. I felt a little like Jordan Klepper but without the balls to be out in public, face to face, doing the real work!
